Apply Imogene King's Goal Attainment Theory to one of the following adolescent issues: obesity, anorexia, depression, alcohol/drug use, or sexual activity. Give a brief overview of how the Goal Attainment Theory can help you improve the health of this particular patient. Lewandowski et al. (2013) note that depression affects up to 25% of adolescents and is a chronically debilitating disorder (Lewandowski, 2013). Depression in adolescents can lead to negative academic, social, and health outcomes. The goal attainment theory uses the nursing process, along with its phases/prepositions when being incorporated into clinical practice. Steps of the nursing process include: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation (Goal Attainment, 2016). King’s concept for the interpersonal system of the goal attainment theory would be used for a patient with depression. During the phases of the attainment theory, interaction between the nurse-patient occurs. Information is gathered including growth and development of current status (such as depression). Communication is required for interaction and translation (this occurs during the assessment stage of the nursing process). If the nurse and patient make transaction, the goal will be achieved. The nurse identifies the problem or concern (depression) in which the patient is seeking help (nursing diagnosis). A care plan and interventions to solve the problem of depression is developed (during the planning stage of the nursing process), and transaction continues with activities to achieve these goals (implementation stage of nursing process).
