The book is showing that there must be a goal to accomplish to find what one is looking for in life. Its shows this through Siddhartha being a Brahmin and the beginning of the novel and being a Samana. Siddhartha goes through his life trying to find his purpose without a real goal in mind. In life to figure out what one wants, there must be a goal to strive for. Siddhartha tries to figure his life out by trying to live like the samana but after he was a Samana he wasn 't satisfied so he once again moved on.
