For the Hebrew people the covenant covered all human relationships. It is a bond which unites people through mutual obligations. It is natural, therefore, a relationship to God was expressed in covenant terms. It occurred between God and Abraham and was the beginning of the relationship between God and Jewish people. Simply put, it provides Jews with God's protection if they uphold and follow his commandments and laws.
Why did God choose Abraham to be the father of all faith? Throughout the Old Testament, the Hebrew patriarchs have always explicitly exhibited qualities that God finds desirable in mankind. For example, in Noah he finds a perfect, righteous human amongst a deeply sinful world and in Moses, he finds a righteous man, whom he can trust to lead the Israelites out of Egypt into the Promised Land. The Old Testament openly mentions these patriarchs’ qualities within the text itself. However, when the reader is introduced to Abraham in Genesis 12, all that is known is that he and his nephew Lot leave Haran for Canaan.
God too, grew to trust Abraham and told him that he planned to destroy Sodom. Upon hearing this, Abraham tried to bargain for Sodom and his nephew Lot’s life. Through bargaining, Abraham illustrated his high level of comfort when talking to God because he was not afraid of God punishing him anymore. God did not let Abraham forget their second covenant and reminded Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. The two also marked their covenant with the sacrifice of an animal that mirrored the sacrifice Abraham’s tribe made to the King of Haran at the beginning of the movie.
Abraham is considered the founding father of the Jewish people; it was through his rejection of pagan idolatry and his whole-hearted acceptance of a single omnipotent God, that a mutual covenant was formed. Abraham promised to accept and warship God alone as the one true divine power, in turn God promises that Abraham’s descendants will become a great nation, and live in the land of Israel (***). This covenant plays an integral role in the relationship that Jewish people have with their God, and serves as the foundation on which a Jewish nation is built. However, it was not until God formed a covenant with Moses that Judaism blossomed as an entire way of life. An interesting passage from the text is when the boy tries to take the purse but is instead stopped due to the weight of the purse, in which the woman proceeds to grab him. This passage is noteworthy because of Langston Hughes’ way of introducing diction and syntax to create an ambiguous tone for the rest of the passage. Another notable excerpt from the text is when the woman confronts the boy about his wrongdoing. This is significant as it gives us an overview of the characters and how they act.
Old Testament Covenants In the Old testament you see God making a lot of promises. During Biblical times these were called Covenants. A Covenant is an “Arrangement between two parties involving mutual obligations; especially the arrangement that established the relationship between God and his people, expressed in grace first with Israel and then with the church. Through that covenant God has conveyed to humanity the meaning of human life and salvation Covenant is one of the central themes of the Bible, where some covenants are between human beings, other between God and Human Beings.”
Through God’s interactions with mankind, he uses certain individuals to perform tasks to reach specific outcomes and rewards them for their actions. But as conflicts arise throughout man's existence, challenges arise and people begin to question God. A challenge to God’s authority as portrayed by Abraham, Jacob, and Moses is justified by its prevalence to the underlying effects each challenge possesses on the future of mankind, in other words God accepts these challenges through the realization that each will consequently change the future and carry out his goals. The problem with this is that it overlooks a lot of rules of interpretation. It does not take a large spectrum on the whole scripture and see what God is up to in his redemptive plan. God has been unfolding his redemptive plan from Adam and it will find it’s consummation in Christ when he reigns bodily on the throne of David as King of kings and Lord of Lords. “Ammillenial deny the promises made to the physical seed of Abraham as a race and they claim that the promised are only given to the spiritual seed and the other implication is that the physical seed have no claim to the promises because they are not part of the spiritual seed of Abraham.” . They ignore the New Testament confirmations of the Old Testament covenant promises which Jesus Christ himself confirmed such as;
In Chapter 12 of the Book of Genesis, Abraham is introduced and the son of Terah, husband of Sarah, and uncle of Lot. Before long, God begins to test him. God tells Abraham that he must leave his home, family, and connections, and if he accomplishes this God will bless him. In Genesis 12:4 it says, “So Abraham departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him…” showing that Abraham did not hesitate to follow the word of God.
