Johnson, often viewed as the first African-American to make a living out of painting in the United States, is well-known for his professional paintings. He was a self-taught painter who worked during the 19th centuries. I thought that focusing on Joshua Johnson, is more interesting because often when the matter of artists in American art history comes up, the focus tends to be on White Americans than on the American artists of color. Joshua Johnson’s paintings were not popular until the year 1939, when they were discovered by art historians, who believed that thirteen portraits were painted by Joshua Johnson.
Jochem Schoonmaker was a member of a family who came from Germany and Holland and settled in the colony of New York in the early 1600’s. He married Lydia Rosencrans in 1730 and together they had fifteen children. He was a farmer and his descendants continue farming his land to this day in the hamlet of Accord in Rochester. An early 18th century farmstead bearing his name is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

His mother was Prudencio Quiroga and his father Pastora Forteza Quiroga who died March 14, 1879 before he was two and a half months old. His father accidentally fired a gun and shot himself during a hunting trip. The tragedies continue to flow, his step father committed suicide in 1899.
