Ralph represents civilization and order, while Jack symbolizes the opposite, savagery and anarchy. This is shown throughout the movie where Ralph always wanted to have fixed rules and jobs for everyone, while on the other hand Jack ruled by force and had only one unspoken rule: that whatever he said was law. They were both appealing as leaders for a variety of reasons, such as their confidence, authoritative disposition, and their seniority. Ralph was appealing because he solved problems, like starting a fire, and when they first reached the island, he was the one who brought them all together with the conch. Jack was appealing because as time went on, Ralph slowly had more difficulty keeping order, causing the boys to lose faith in him as a
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies depicts many different types of authority. Despite the fact that Piggy has the potential to gain authority, only Jack and Ralph have authority over the boys in the novel. Although they both have authority, Jack and Ralph rule as chief in very different ways. Ralph rules through order while Jack rules through fear, and a system of reward and punishment. Golding shows that authority based on desire and fear always triumphs over authority based on order and reason.
A Comparison of Jack and Ralph’s Different Governments Aristotle once said, “Different men seek after happiness in different ways and by different means, and so make for themselves different modes of life and form of government”. The Greek philosopher’s words explain that people have various ways to be happy and in order to reach that happiness, they will change how they live and how they rule just for themselves. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the two “chiefs”, Ralph and Jack, both create seperate ways of living and ruling on the island due to their wants. Democratic power can be used to control a society, as well as establish a closeness as civilians. To lose sight of this can mean the corruption of a civilization caused by the lack of order. One’s choice of independence in order to better the chances of their survival requires complete dedication and willingness to risk. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Ralph loses his democratic power due to his failure to ensure survival and protect the boys as a leader. Ralph’s failure to lead the group is due to his initial and chronic independence and inability to compete with Jack’s followers, accounted for mainly by fear.
Although Jack expresses strong desire to become chief, the boys elect Ralph as a leader, suggesting an air of charisma that made him worthy of his position. He believes a leader has to “think, be wise… grab at a decision”, someone who can look after others and keep the group in
Ralph’s power struggle with Jack represents the difference of how civilizations control and how tyrants control. When first arriving on the island, some sort of leadership is needed, and is where the reader first sees the difference of civilization and savagery in choosing a leader and decision making. Prior to being stranded on the island, Jack was in charge of the chorus boys; he was elected not by the students, but by the teachers. Ralph, however, had no authority before, but it is not

In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack compete to have the title of chief, this illustrates Golding's message that in society dictatorship can be more successful than democracy. Characters in this novel resemble people in WWII. Jack is a symbol of dictatorship and Ralph is a symbol of democracy. In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
Totalitarianism is a form of government often lead by one powerful leader that controls all aspects of society. But, what allows this oppressive form of government to succeed? In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, Jack is a boy who likes to have control. And, to do that he creates a mold with rules that every boy has to fit into. Jack reflects the qualities of a totalitarian ruler, and makes totalitarianism successful by taking advantage of the fear the boys have on the island.
On the Origin of space and time Understanding the reality of space and time has been one of the main themes of many of the great scientists and philosophers such as Newton, Leibniz, Kant, and others. However, these scientists and philosophers had different arguments. While Newton argued that space and time are real and absolute, Leibniz and Kant argued that space and time are ideal, but for Leibniz space and time are object-dependent, while they are mind-dependent for Kant. All these thinkers’ perspectives counted on the Euclidean geometry and the associated understanding of motion, but they were refuted by Einstein’s theory of relativity and Poincare’s mathematical conventionalism.
