As a Navy Reservist in a top cargo handling unit, I found myself on an airplane more often than I could have imagined. In those 5 years, we traveled to Virginia and Texas numerous times throughout the year for our weekend meetings not to mention yearly trips to places like California, Guam and Hawaii. It doesn't matter if I was away for the weekend or for two and a half weeks, packing made me apprehensive. I knew what I must bring... the uniform and what I wanted to bring... fun clothes.
When an air raid was occurring a prisoner trying to get a hold of soup “let out a terrible scream, a death rattle such as I had never had before, and with an open mouth, thrust his head toward the still seaming liquid. (59-60).” This example of imagery occurs when a man is shot while in the process of trying to get soup. However, both restaurants encountered a long distance drive and the meals were going to be more expensive. That's when i indicated getting Hungry Howie's takeout for dinner. I proposed that the drive was not as long, twenty dollars could feed the whole family, and we could eat in the comfort of our home.
In “Crossing the Swamp” by Mary Oliver, the poet uses various forms of figurative language to develop the similar relationship between the speaker and the swamp. The poet portrays this relationship through the use of visual imagery, alliteration, personification and metaphor. The visual imagery provides a clear image of the swamp and the speaker, meanwhile the alliteration is used to further compare how the swamp is related to the speaker. Personification is used to portray the swamp with human qualities; something that seems real to the readers. Finally, a metaphor is used to associate the speaker’s life and the passage through the swamp.

No one wants to be different but, everyone is. One of the main reason is culture. There are so many cultures that it makes it seem you are different from everyone else. In “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan, and “Taco Head” by Viola Candales both narrators face internal conflict with their culture and how people see them. They struggle with who they are, and who they want to be.

Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
The images that the words create makes it feel as if you were really there looking at everything actually happening. Such as, “They stretched their beloved lord in his boat, laid out by the mast, amidships. The great ring-giver. Farfetched treasures were piled on him,and precious gear.” This is a great example of imagery.

Everyone has a responsibility to do. However, for working student like me that having a part-time job while taking college courses is a big responsibility. I decided to go to school full-time and work part-time to learn to become independent. Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese” was a text that had a profound, illuminating, and positive impact upon me due to its use of imagery, its relevant and meaningful message, and the insightful process of preparing the poem for verbal recitation.
