Halee Smith In American history the Vietnam War is one of the most important most tragic wars in history. The Vietnam War was from the time frame of 1954 to 1975. United States had good intentions going into the war but when they got to the fighting and the decision making they made some bad decisions, which made people in the United States oppose of the Vietnam War. The United States gets involved with the Vietnam War by The Gulf of Tonkin, when one of the North Vietnamese patrol boats attacks one of the United States ships. Let’s start with the positives first The Tonkin Resolution helps Southeast Asia is a positive because the American people are assisting Southeast Asia to protect their freedom.The United States tries to stop communism in the 1950’s which is a positive towards the United States because the United States doesn’t think that communism is right. Search and Destroy can have positive and a negative outlook on it because search and destroy helped the increase killing amount but the negative would be that the United States didn’t know if we were killing the good guys(South Vietnamese) or the bad guys( North Vietnamese). More negatives would be United States bombing of the North began by 1963 and JFK sent in 16,000 military “advisors”. This leads to a blank check which means the president has extraordinary war powers to take all necessary measures to defend his country. A war tactic called “Guerrilla Warfare” was a negative because the United States men didn’t know how to fight back and the United States military were losing men quickly. John Kerry was a negative part of the war because he led troops but he didn’t give them any guidance of what to do. So as you may see the negatives outweigh the
