Throughout the semester we have looked at many texts from the late middle ages to the beginning of the Russian Revolution. We were to keep the theme of the good life in our minds while learning about these events. Every character and person we encounter through our readings were very different and also very alike. They may have come from different places, religions, and gender but were all concerned with one thing. This was the good life. The good life was the driving force in each and every ones lives. My goal in this paper is to explore factors that consist of a good life by bringing examples from the texts we have looked at in class to connect them with key components that fit this theme. The first thing I want to discuss before getting into what makes the good life, is what is the good life? The good life is directly linked to virtue. Each person lives are made of many choices. The path that they choose can either lead to a virtuous life or non virtuous life. Many of the people we read about believe if you choose a sinful life then you can never be a virtuous person and obtain a good life. The good life isn 't based upon one thing you did once, that happened to be good. It is the things you do your entire life, the people you meet, and the traits and emotions that you posses. Within this complete works we read many tales involving many different characters. A few of the characters I would like to talk about are the Knight and the Wife of Bath. The Wife of Bath was quite the character, she was very manipulative with her seven husbands but she was content in her life. Others thought she was not a virtuous person because of the way she had married seven men and her love of sex.
