What are good men? Good men are the elect children of God. They are good because Christ is in them. However, they are still totally depraved, but they have the Holy Spirit working in their hearts so that they can do good works. They are also good because they hate sin and love God, who is good. We see throughout history that good men suffer. Abel was killed by his own brother because Abel loved the Lord and witnessed to Cain. Joseph was sold by his own brothers and sat in prison because his brothers were jealous of their father’s love for Joseph. David had to flee from his own son, Absolom, because Absolom wanted to kill David. All of Judah was taken captive under Nebuchadnezzar. Job lost his children and all his earthly riches. John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod. Stephen was martyred for his faith. Paul was whipped and sat in prison. Peter and many of the apostles were martyred. Martin Luther had to constantly flee and hide because of what he believed. John Calvin suffered through many sicknesses and persecutions. There are many people in the world who profess to be Christians, but then under persecution they forget the Lord and deny their faith. True Christians can be guilty of this, too. Peter denied the Lord three times. Others might forget the Lord when they lose their jobs, a loved one dies, or they become sick. They think God has forgotten them. God never forgets His people. He gives them trials to test their faith. When God sends His people trials, they grow in faith. His people come out of the trials with stronger faith. God said to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you.” God leads us through the trials and never leaves us nor forsakes us. Christians must never be afraid of God leaving them because He never will.
