For an estimate of 11 years, the Ariel Castro abducted and later held captive three young Cleveland girls in his house at 2207 Seymour Avenue, where he harmed them physically, emotionally, and sexually every day. Michelle Knight was kidnaped on August 22, 2002 at the age of 21. Ariel Castro saw her, she needed help getting to her son’s appointment. He took her into his vehicle with promises of a ride instead took her to his house and promises of a puppy for her son. Once inside, Ms. Knight was exposed to numerous physical, psychological, and sexual assaults that lasted for 11 years.

County Prosecutor Timothy I. McGinty was in charge of filing a sentencing memo with the court listing Ariel Castro's crimes and outlining the seriousness of his offenses. On July 12, a Cuyahoga County grand jury returned a true bill of indictment. It took a total of 977 counts. Which included 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 of rape, six of felonious assault, seven of gross sexual imposition, three of child endangerment, two of aggravated murder, and one of possession of criminal tools. On July 17, Ariel Castro pled not guilty.
Analysis
Castro injured and wounded each of the three young girls that he captured and confined. He degraded, humiliated and diminished them. He took away ten years of their life during the stages of life when a girl becomes a woman. They had no way to connect with family, friends, and has no connection with the outside world. He did other damage, through physical hurt, starving, impregnating and aborting. At some level of consciousness, they must have known that freedom was not an option and they had no way out but staying there forever. They were mentally taken advantage to the point they felt they could not leave and I believe even deceive them by telling them he was protecting them from the outside world. On May 8, he was charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. And these charges carry prison sentences of 10 years to life in the state of Ohio. On May 9, his very first court attendance, where his bail was set at $2 million per kidnapping charge which meant a total of $8 million. Other charges were stated to be awaiting, including aggravated murder (for the forceful miscarriages), attempted murder, assault, a charge for each suspected case of rape, and a kidnapping charge for each day each captive was supposedly held.
On July 26, 2013, Castro pleaded guilty to 937 of the 977 charges against him, including charges of kidnapping, rape, and aggravated murder, as part of a plea bargain which called for consecutive sentences of life in prison plus 1,000 years, both without parole, which meant he would not get the death penalty. Ariel Castro gave up his right to appeal, losing all his assets, including his home, which would be knocked down. At the sentencing hearing on August 1, 2013, Castro was sentenced to life in prison, plus 1,000 years. He was also fined
