“There is two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance,” John C. Maxwell, a contemporary author and inspirational speaker, enlightens the reader with his profound view about pride. This life coach inspires individuals to be aware of the two faces of pride, both good and bad. Good pride is a great quality to have because it teaches such amazing traits, however pride can be turned bad as well. Bad pride can lead to awful actions and thoughts. It can ruin anyone's life. For example, pride helps a person to develop self-respect. “Doodle and I went down to horsehead landing and I gave him swimming lessons or showed him how to row a boat” (173). This shows self respect by teaching Doodle how to do these activities. Doodle gains self respect because he has never been able to do these things before. When he finally succeeds at swimming or rowing a boat, it is a big accomplishment for a boy with a disability, and Doodle finally can gain confidence and self respect. Pride can also help an individual achieve personal goals. For example, “Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds. When he fell, I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him” (172). The narrator helped Doodle achieve a goal of standing on his own, which was almost impossible for a six year old boy with a physical disability. Lastly, pride can help people to persevere, such as, “Oh yes you can Doodle, I said. All you got to do is try” (172). The narrator is encouraging Doodle to try and not to give up. This strengthens Doodles perseverance and doesn’t make Doodle want to give up just because it is difficult. Clearly, pride is a wonderful quality to obtain. In conclusion, pride is a good quality to obtain because it teaches many positive characteristics as well as helping people to live healthier lives.
