There are many ways an author can convey the message of any story. Elements such as the Plot, Conflict, Character/Characterization, Setting, Symbolism, Narration, and Imagery are used in these ways. For example, in the In the story "Harrison Bergeron", the author Kurt Vonnegut uses the characterization, and the conflict to communicate the message to the reader that Uniformity and strict laws lead to a loss of personal freedom and individuality. Vonnegut uses the element of characterization.
Food of the Gods, Starship Troopers, and A Legend of the Future all share common characteristics where the audience can attempt to redefine science fiction. In relation with the three books, there is a strive of perfection affected by human emotions, an idea of dissociation, and a relationship between technology and humankind. To begin with, Food of the Gods is able to express the idea of perfection through boomfood. Herakleophorbia was the next big thing, “a vista of enormous possibilities” as scientist Bensington remarked.
Authors use characters and genres to develop theme. Sometimes different genres can be used to build the same theme. In the poem, “The Lesson of the Moth,” poet Don Marquis uses the protagonist, a moth, to teach the narrator, Archy, a cockroach, what it is like to have a dream worth dying for. Similarly, Daniel Keyes, author of “Flowers for Algernon,” a short story, uses the main character, Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man who longs to be smart, to develop the idea that it is better to risk to achieve happiness rather than to live wondering what life could have been like. Both the poet and the author use the main character in their literary work to contribute to the idea that risking something is worth even momentary happiness.

According to the book he wrote, he thinks that humans can very easily cross the line between good and evil.
The setting of the movie in a classic suburban community around the 1950’s. The community aims for perfection in a way, that nothing odd is okay. That is why the mansion, where Edward Scissorhands has got residence, is a spot of dirt of the picture of perfection the community is trying to show. The color scheme makes the good versus evil theme very clear in the movie, in the way there is a clear contrast between good and evil. For example, the ‘good’ of the movie is shown, when we see the colors of the characters and the surrounding area.

“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5). John Steinbeck’s work, East of Eden, is the one he considered to be his greatest, with all novels before leading up to it. Indeed, it grandly recounts the stories of the human race as told by the Bible, including Adam and Eve, but most prominently that of Cain and Abel. It touches upon both Steinbeck’s own family and a fictional family in a depiction of “man 's capacity for both good and evil” (Fontenrose). Joseph Fontenrose, however, criticizes Steinbeck’s message as contradictory and convoluted, with no clear relationship between good and evil.
Science fiction is fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets. One article stated, “Harrison Bergeron effectively renders Vonnegut’s vision of the unethical, misguided use of scientific and technological developments in the future” (Reed and Grigsby). The authors are explaining the fact that Vonnegut is using scientific and technological developments in the future. They are showing that they are using it for the bad, not for the good of life.
Susan Sontag, an author of the essay “Imagination Disaster,” explores the world of science fiction as she discusses the tropes in films from the mid-1900s. Throughout her essay, Sontag analyzes why these types of films were created, and basically ties her discussion with humanity. With the growing technological advances, science fiction films state specific things about how science threatens humanity. She also ties her discussion to how sci-fi films tend to serve an attempt at distributing a balance between humanity and the technological world. Sontag claims that science fiction films has suspense, shock, surprises, has an inexorable plot, and how they invite a dispassionate, aesthetic view of destruction and violence.
