One of the key elements that make America a free country is the transparency and accountability of the democratic government; but contrary to popular belief, there exists more than one type of government in America. When most people hear the word government, they think of the differing levels of state government, but in reality, every organization, company, and firm in America has its own miniature version of a government. While similar in structure, the state government of America and the individual governments of businesses operate very differently. Public leaders allow their constituents to play a role in how the leadership operates. The United States government operates publicly so the decision-making process involves everyone; the people vote to express their beliefs about how the country should operate and likewise have the authority to remove/do away with policies and politicians who they believe violate and fail to represent their beliefs and rights. Conversely, in a private government, the decision-making process only involves one person or a small group of people and is “not up for debate” (Rothman). A parent who tells their child that he/she must do something, because “they said so,” serves as an example of a private government. Ironically, the bosses of many capitalist companies use similar reasoning to justify many of their decisions when they do things like subject workers to random drug screenings and belonging inspections.
