Personal Narrative: A Day At The Dominican Republic

The one graduation present that I’ll never forget was from my dad and stepmom. They went above and beyond to surprise me with the best graduation present to go on a cruise. This wasn’t no small cruise by any means, it was eight days long with four different ports. The day to remember most was day four at the Dominican Republic. You should always be thankful for everything you get and never take anything for granted. Treat lower class as if you would want to be treated by a class higher than you. The food there is so much different than in the United States. We are so use to processed food and corn grown cattle that we have become prone to the way meat taste here. A hamburger in the Dominican Republic doesn’t taste like a hamburger from the United States. Seeing the way they live there is heart breaking. Watching families of five or six people all ride on one motorcycle, watching little kids run around with no shirts or shoes, watching people dig through trash cans. I can’t express how much it makes me appreciate my life and freedom. Coming back home to be surrounded by people who are always complaining makes me think that everyone needs to experience something like that so they will also appreciate their lifestyle. The one thing I think broke my heart most was when we were passing a trash dump and there was some young ladies digging through the trash and hauling it down the mountain side on the tops of their heads. This country is so poor that they have to go through other people's week maybe even month old trash to get what they need. I can’t imagine the idea of going to the dump to have our Sunday
