The book “ The Journal of Augustus Pelletier “ by Kathryn Lasky is about The Lewis and CLark expedition. Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark want Augustus Pelletier to be one of their men and help them out, to seek for new territories. As Augustus Pelletier did go to help Captains Lewis and William. He saw many Indians, one named Sacajawea who helped them guide them through the new land for them. On May 21, 1804, Augustus Pelletier makes a choice and follows Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Corps Of Discovery.
Lewis and Clark were known for an incredible journey that changed US history. The journey increased the size of the US dramatically. From May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, a dangerous but yet history changing exploration occurred. Through many dangerous situations and hardships, the expedition of Lewis and Clark turned out a success.
In the year 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, alongside 31 other people, set out to find the source of the Mississippi and “discover” the land that they had bought from the French-- Louisiana. This expedition was by the command, and in the name of, President Thomas Jefferson. However, I believe that the Native Americans were the real heroes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, as they guided the group in two (and probably more) instances, and went on to endure the aftermath of the expedition. While this isn’t evidence of them being the real heroes, as it is honestly just disproving the idea that Lewis and Clark are the heroes, the Corps of Discovery didn’t even do anything that great, and are being constantly romanticized by America,
People normally wouldn’t think about the importance that two people had on this world from over 200 years ago. Have you ever thought about the impact that these two men, Lewis and Clark had on our world, and how they might’ve changed things for the United States? Most likely not. These two men set out on a journey that lasted 2 years and 4 months to search for a land route to the Pacific, to strengthen American claims to the Oregon territory, also to gather more information about the inhabitants and country of the Far West. You may not think these two men have any importance to today but, they discovered many things that this world knows today.
Perhaps the biggest challenge of writing this book: finding the mistakes made by the Corps of Discovery. The expedition of Lewis, Clark, and the rest of the Corps of Discovery is one of the most revered stories of American history. Nonetheless, everyone is prone to mistakes, even Lewis and Clark. A fatal mistake, one which could’ve ended in the Corps of Discovery being lost to history if they had been stuck just a bit longer, was the choice to venture through Bitterroot Mountains.
Many modern Americans know the story of Sacajawea, how she led Lewis and Clark on their expedition to explore the new land found in the Louisiana Purchase. Many of these modern Americans are unaware that most of the story is false. There are many popular misconceptions on Sacagawea, including the spelling and pronunciation of her name (credited to Nicholas Biddle), the definition of her name (the responsibility of John Rees) , and the role she played in the Lewis and Clark Expedition (courtesy of Dr. Grace Raymond Hebard). Despite what many might think, "Undaunted Courage" by Steven Ambrose is an excellent non-fiction adventure about the journey of Lewis and Clark. This book rekindled my interest in the Lewis and Clark Exhibition and I would recommend it to all. An excellent book that forces one to appreciate not just Lewis and Clark, but all Americans who took great risks to allow us to live as we do. In many standard books, it is said that Lewis death was an accident or a murder, while in "Undaunted Courage" his death has ruled a suicide. I had also learned that the only people on this journey were Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and a young Indian named Sacagawea, a young Indian who had been captured by Lewis and Clark to serve as a guide.

Lewis and Clark are to American explorers who are still idolized to this day. The exploration of the west happened over 200 years ago. Their journey started in 1804 and didn’t end until 1806. The reason being is that they were the first successful American expedition to explore the west. In 1804 Thomas Jefferson contracted them to explore the west and in doing so to be diplomats with the Indians and to be scientists during the expedition.

On April 7, 1805 the Lewis and Clark exploration provided all gathered information from the trip and sent it to Missouri making the expedition results vitally important to the nations growth by providing information from the crews hard work (Corps of Discover, 2016). John Smith is now a house-hold name in American folklore due to his involvement with American Indians and his portrayal in the Pocahontas Disney movie, but many fail to know that he was responsible for the survival of England’s first colony in America. His leadership, and determination helped discipline the colonists, while his negotiations with the Indians prevented starvation and lowered the mortality rate. Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England in 1580. At the age of 16, he became a soldier, but was captured and sold into slavery. Smith killed his master and wandered through Europe and the Mediterranean before returning to England in 1604.
The Bannock tribe was a huge and important tribe with rich history and culture until the building of Fort Hall when the white settlers came, and that eventually led to their destruction. The history and the traditions of the Bannock tribe, which is where they were located, the food they ate, and the games they played like the relay races, is a huge part of who they are today. The Bannock’s lands were located in what is now known as Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and into Canada. Another part of the Bannock tribe was its neighbors the Shoshone tribe.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition Thomas Jefferson proposed for the west to be explored, but it was the brave and talented men of Lewis and Clark to lead an exploration into the unchartered land. The west was unknown to the settlers of eastern America. Voyages had been attempted but none succeeded and proved to be any useful until Lewis and Clark took over. The men were to be challenged by unknown animals, plants and Indians; whilst overcoming new climates and terrains, with the main task still at mind of finding a water passage to the Pacific Ocean. The men were prepared to be pushed to their maximum and have to fight to stay alive in unknown territory.
What makes the Galapagos unique? Most people will point to the animals, plants or other environmental aspects of the islands. No matter what way you put it, what makes the Galapagos special is in danger. The Galapagos Islands are not separate from problems which are affecting the rest of the world, especially other eco-tourism hotspots. If issues such as population growth, construction and tourism are not addressed soon we will lose the paradise that is the Galapagos to human development and tourism.
