Undaunted Courage by Steven Ambrose is written about the exploration of the West by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States, decided to send Lewis on this exploration, and Lewis chose to take Clark along with him. Many people criticized Jefferson because westward expansion had been tried before and failed. Others argued that he shouldn’t be allowed to purchase land with their tax dollars. Ambrose argues that Jefferson made the correct decision in choosing Lewis to explore the land that makes up Louisiana, Arkansas, parts of northeastern Texas, Oklahoma, eastern Colorado, and Minnesota (Kindle Locations 92-93).
President Thomas Jefferson in 1804 elected as president. One day, he discovers that the French were selling the Louisiana Territory to Spain, he takes advantage of this and buys it instead, thus making the Louisiana Purchase to extend the U.S. two times its original size and to gain control of New Orleans Mississippi River. After the purchase, the Lewis & Clark Expedition was formed to discover more about the Louisiana Territory in which the Native Americans had dwelled. Lewis & Clark were respectful to the Native Americans they encountered during their expedition because they had to prevent future quarrels. Lewis and Clark were mostly friendly to the Native Americans due to a request from Thomas Jefferson himself to be kind to them.
Lewis and Clark traveled to the northern parts of the area. They met with different native tribes the Mandan tribe, Hirata, Teton Sioux, and Oto. They met French trappers, they also met a French trapper whose wife named Sacagawea, was of the Shoshone tribe. She was great with speaking to different tribes. During their journey, they wrote in a journal.

People normally wouldn’t think about the importance that two people had on this world from over 200 years ago. Have you ever thought about the impact that these two men, Lewis and Clark had on our world, and how they might’ve changed things for the United States? Most likely not. These two men set out on a journey that lasted 2 years and 4 months to search for a land route to the Pacific, to strengthen American claims to the Oregon territory, also to gather more information about the inhabitants and country of the Far West. You may not think these two men have any importance to today but, they discovered many things that this world knows today.
The Lewis and Clark expedition was a turning point in American history. It radically expanded our current knowledge of what used to be the Louisiana Territory. When thinking of this expedition, most forget that many people accompanied Lewis and Clark. Each member had important jobs and roles that may have drastically increased the aqusition of knowledge. There were even cases of incredulous misbehavior with appropriate punishments, and of course, along the way deaths occurred.
On their way back, Clark and Lewis split up to explore more of the land and find a faster route home. In July, a group of Blackfeet Indians put Lewis and his men in danger when they wanted to steal from the corps. In the end, two Blackfeet were killed. The next month, one
This was a good thing to be on the expedition because when we needed food he could go out and get something for us to eat. Lewis was a collected of plants and animals. So when on the journey it was a good thing that Lewis was there because if a plant of animal was dangerous he would tell us to be careful of not. One of the last things that Meriwether was was a great woodsman that was very handy during the expedition because if they needed to make a shelter of a boat he could make it for us and he did.
There were many challenges when exploring, one of them was the weather. If it was too hot, you could acquire a stroke, or you could run out of water and dehydrate; If it was too cold you could acquire frostbite. There were wild animals like bears, wolves, and snakes, there were also geographic obstacles like mountains and rivers, there were natural disasters as well. William Clark affected at least 80,000,000 people, I know this because the west coast is populated by 47,800,000 people, and the Journey of Discovery covered the middle of the country as well, all of those people wouldn’t have been able to move out there, if the Lewis and Clark expedition hadn’t explored that area and made maps. Without William Clark, America would be much less populated.
It will make them believe that what Lewis and Clark did was truly a life threatening and dangerous expedition but also a trip of excitement and captivating landmarks. The author shows the readers pictures of the same landmarks and trails that the two explorers endured on their adventure as the authors try to recreate the same one. In the book the authors use dates, maps, journals, and several other materials to take the same expedition that Lewis and Clark did. Their goal was to make readers aware of all the excitement and hardships they had to accustom to and undergo. On several pages throughout the book the authors have placed pictures of the maps they used, landmarks, the terrain, and the animals they came across throughout their venture.
These past two years and four months, I had the honor of accompanying Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and the Corps of Discovery on their journey. The expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, and I was invited to document the journey from the eyes of an average person to express to the public the hardships, discoveries and relationships the Corps made. We left on the fact finding mission across the newly purchased Louisiana Territory in May of 1804. Our main goal was to find a water route from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean more commonly known as the Northwest Passage. We also made our best effort to establish good relations with any Native American tribe we encounter and inform them their land was now under the control of the United States government.

On April 7, 1805 the Lewis and Clark exploration provided all gathered information from the trip and sent it to Missouri making the expedition results vitally important to the nations growth by providing information from the crews hard work (Corps of Discover, 2016).
