Thomas Jefferson the 3rd president of the United States asked the congress to pay for a expedition into the Western part of the US. When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were asked about this the said that they were up to do it. On this expedition they went and discovered new plants, animals, and landscapes. One thing that Jefferson wanted Lewis and Clark to do was to find the water route to the Pacific Ocean. This trip started at St.Louis in 1804 we traveled down the Missouri River to the Louisiana territory. Along the way we met a few Indian tribes. We went on this expedition to claim land in the Western territories, to establish a relationship with the Native Americans, and Jefferson didn’t want a foreign country claiming the land that was ours. Once we traveled to the Missouri River we crossed the Rocky Mountains. We lived with some Native Americans during the winter and we negotiated and traded with some other Native Americans. This was a good thing to be on the expedition because when we needed food he could go out and get something for us to eat. Lewis was a collected of plants and animals. So when on the journey it was a good thing that Lewis was there because if a plant of animal was dangerous he would tell us to be careful of not. One of the last things that Meriwether was was a great woodsman that was very handy during the expedition because if they needed to make a shelter of a boat he could make it for us and he did. William Clark was a expert map maker which was good because then if we needed someone to make or read a map for us so we knew where we were going. Clark also commanded the boats on the river and he made it so they knew if they needed to go up-stream or down-stream. He was a great leader which is a good because people listened to him. Clark was me a at times and he kind of drilled his men hard at some points but he took time to know and understand
