Lewis and Clark traveled to the northern parts of the area. They met with different native tribes the Mandan tribe, Hirata, Teton Sioux, and Oto. They met French trappers, they also met a French trapper whose wife named Sacagawea, was of the Shoshone tribe. She was great with speaking to different tribes. During their journey, they wrote in a journal.

Before Lewis and clark there were plans to explore the west, there would of been a first explorer named Michaax but they found out he was a secret agent for the French.

It was a long, difficult and tiring journey for over a 2 year time period. They had to face many problems along the way like the cold weather, snake bites, mosquitoes, getting chased by bears, lack of food, and most of all crossing the Rocky Mountains. Their hardwork and dedication, even through all the struggles lead to many new discoveries like new people, animals, plants, land, waterways, and trades. Which made a mark in history and contributed to the knowledge of the country, if Lewis and Clark did not travel this journey, it could’ve been years before we discovered new lands, plants, animals, etc. The Lewis and Clark expedition opened a new chapter in history full of discovering new things and exploring new lands that humans did not know
Lewis and clark had a really large expedition starting May 14, 1804 to september 23, 1806 exploring the louisiana purchase area. While going through a lot of hard times the Lewis and Clark expedition was a great success. Lewis and Clark went through a lot of hard times in the lewis and clark expedition. First, they had to make friends with the indians witch in some cases is not the easiest thing to do. They also had to go through cold weather when they went into states like North Dakota.

The Lewis and Clark expedition was a turning point in American history. It radically expanded our current knowledge of what used to be the Louisiana Territory. When thinking of this expedition, most forget that many people accompanied Lewis and Clark. Each member had important jobs and roles that may have drastically increased the aqusition of knowledge. There were even cases of incredulous misbehavior with appropriate punishments, and of course, along the way deaths occurred.
It was on February 28, 1803 that President Thomas Jefferson won Congressional approval for the expedition of the Western lands that would become the adventures of Merriwether Lewis and William Clark.(1) A budget of $2,500 was allotted for the expedition of the group who were dubbed “The Corps of Discovery” by Jefferson. Jefferson was extremely interested in the western lands, so much so that his personal library at his home, Monticello, had more books on the subject than any other library in the world. (2) The group were to be led by Jefferson’s secretary, Merriwether Lewis, and Lewis’ friend William Clark.
After studying astronomy, map-making, and other survival skills Meriwether made for the perfect explorer candidate. Lewis asked William Clark, a friend he made in army, to co-captain this journey with him. In mid-October Lewis and Clark made the final preparations in Clarksville, Indiana territory. It is here that they assembled the team that would accompany them on this trip. This team that was composed of Native American experts and men who were familiar with upper Missouri.
These two men weren’t just two “average Joe’s”. Meriwether Lewis was a very experienced man of the military. Beginning his career in 1794, he joined William Clark’s Chosen Rifle Company, led by his future fellow explorer. Lewis served in several different positions while in the Army. He jumped from rank to rank fairly quickly.
The two strong men together were unstoppable, their attributes combined to make a good strong management for the other men to look up to in times of trouble or solitude. Lewis and Clark started their expedition all because Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory to United States, which at the time was not charted by the americans. The summer of 1803 was the start to great expedition. August 3, 1804 the first meeting was held with western Indians, the Oto and Missouri.

Lewis and Clark are credited while being two of the greatest explorers of our time. In spring of 1806 they after months of planning, strategizing and general preparation, they set out on a 3,700mi trek through the Luisiana Purchase. They began from St. Louis, Illinois with roughly 40 men - including Clark’s slave,York. On this trip they would face many hardships, including malnutrition. But, they had help from the friendly tribesmen on their way.
His new commander would be William Clark, the man who soon joined him on his journey to the west. Lewis respected Clark that he made him a Co- commanding captain of the expedition, even though Clark was never recognized as such by the government. Together they collected a diverse military Corps of discovery that would be able to undertake a two-year journey to the great ocean. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Lewis to lead an expedition to explore the newly bought territory in Louisiana in order to further trade. Jefferson also wanted information on the plant and animal life of the American west.
