Were Lewis and Clark the parents of superman? In 1801, Meriwether Lewis left the army due to an invitation to serve as Thomas Jefferson’s secretary while Jefferson was in office. Lewis had known president Jefferson since he was a boy, “he had grown up on a plantation in virginia a few miles from Monticello, and they had went on to make a relationship working together in the White House.” When Jefferson conceived his grand expedition to the west during 1802, he immediately named the intellectual and gifted Meriwether Lewis as its commander. Most historians believed he committed suicide while the other few believed he was murdered. Despite his tragic end, Lewis helped change the face of the United States by exploring uncharted territory which is now the American West. Lewis also advanced scientific knowledge through his careful work where numerous discoveries of previously unknown plants and animals were made. Serving as a frontier army officer in 1795, Meriwether Lewis was court-martialed for challenging a lieutenant to a duel during a dispute while drunk. The 21-year-old was found not guilty, but his superiors decided to transfer him to a different rifle company to avoid any incidents in the future. His new commander would be William Clark, the man who soon joined him on his journey to the west. Lewis respected Clark that he made him a Co- commanding captain of the expedition, even though Clark was never recognized as such by the government. Together they collected a diverse military Corps of discovery that would be able to undertake a two-year journey to the great ocean.
