Thesis Statement: Lewis and Clark took a journey that would last over 3 years, and made many discoveries about the plants and wildlife, they met Sacagawea who translated and her presents allowed for better communication to open trade with the Indians, but also gained knowledge for maps that would be used for future exploration. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the land gained from the Louisiana Purchase and to let the native American Indians of that area know there was a new presidency. President Jefferson wanted them to record their findings; animals, plants, and locations. The president wanted Lewis and Clark to set up good relations with the Indians, and let them know there was a new presidency. Lewis and Clark left with a large group of men, then eventually Sacagawea. Lewis and Clark were fortunate to hire Sacagawea’s husband as a translator. Sacagawea was captured from her tribe, then later won by her French husband in a bet from the tribe that took her. When Lewis and Clark requested her husband as a translator she was pregnant but they join in on the expedition. Sacagawea spoke many Indian languages, and French, also her being a woman with a child brought tension down when they would approach a tribe to bring them gift and discuss future trade, without her presence a large group of predominantly white males’ may would have shut down and trades before they
