Throughout the Critical Thinking Reader, The Grapes of Wrath, and my research paper, I learned critical thinking skills. These critical thinking skills allowed me to be able to analyze and piece together information in order to form concepts. The Critical Thinking Reader, taught me critical thinking skills, which allowed me to learn that language always has a message to convey. Additionally, I learned that an identity can be found in many forms. Through The Grapes of Wrath novel, I was able to learn critical thinking skills that helped me realize that there are numerous characters that go through different transitions throughout the novel. In the essay, “The Language of Oppression” by Haig A. Bosmajian, he explains the power of using names to define others. Bosmajian states “[t]he power which comes from names and naming is related . . . to the power to define others- individuals, races, sexes, ethnic groups” (Bosmajian, pg.80). He explains that there is a certain power that comes from naming individuals and groups. With that power, one can define the group to be either something positive or negative. Bosmajian uses the Nazis and the Jews to explain this. The Nazis renamed the Jews as “disease”, “plague”, “demon”, and many more terrible names. Renaming the Jews, allowed for the Nazis to come up with the Final Solution, in order to save their race from the “disease” the Jews possessed. This resulted in the death of six million Jewish people. If one wishes to take control or dominate someone or group, they simply change the way they use language. Language can alter the way one thinks. In the same essay, “The Language of Oppression” by Haig A. Bosmajian, he discusses the way someone thinks, can be changed by language. So when the Nazis renamed the Jews, they actually believed that the Jews were those bad names, which justified the Final Solution. Or perhaps, when the United States suppressed and segregated the African American people. This was considered reasonable, because they were seen as subordinate. In the essay, “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurtson, she proves just this. She found herself and embraced each part of her identity. One can be given an identity based upon a name. The essay, “By Any Other Name” by Santha Ramu Rau, proves this as well. She was given a new name and therefore created a new identity for that name. The essay “The Language of Oppression” by Haig A.
