For our career class I interview Ian Davies. He has a degree in graphic design from MCAD and is the Creative Director at his design firm. The reason I interviewed Ian is because I would like to go into graphic design. One of the first questions I asked was what his day to day job entailed. His daily duties surprised me on how vast they were One day he could be meeting with clients to decide what they are looking for, and another he could be designing things to improve his own company. A Creative Director is the head graphic designer in a firm and works both above and with other designers guiding them in the overall path of each project. Also because the main goal of cooperation’s is to make money there is usually time and budget restrains you have to work around to achieve a final product. Because of these time restraints graphic design is not a regular forty hour work week. Ian explained it is usually a sixty to eighty hour work week which usually involves taking work home and many late nights. Another thing I could really relate to was the problem that creativity cannot simply be turned on or off. I too struggle with being able to be creative on the spot but I find it a nice way to challenge myself to see what I can do. Because designs all around us it is a very competitive career field. New talent is always around the corner, which is why you must always be striving to be your best. This is one of the aspects Ian likes the most, this keeps his employees and himself on their toes to constantly be putting forth their best effort. I really like this aspect of the job, a job that challenges you every day helps you grow as a person and sharpens your skills overall. As for the future outlook of the job, it can only go up with how fast our society is
