The Great Depression

During the Roaring Twenties, the lifestyle of the Jazz Age led to an enormous consumer debt that later on formed a great part to the beginning of the Great Depression. However, in the United States, the depression began right after the stock market crash of October 1929, in which sent the wall street into a dismay and obliterated millions of investors. President Herbert Hoover's efforts to revive the economies prosperity failed, as a result Americans elected a Democratic president, Franklin D. Roosevelt in hope of upturning the country's decline. However, to begin with there was a reduction in items purchased so fewer items were made and this led to the cutback of workforce as unemployment rates rose up drastically (The Great Depression, 2016, para. 3). Millions of families lost their savings as banks collapsed in the 1920’s. Moreover, many children were suffering since their parents were not able to even bring food to their homes. For instance, the harsh reality of the depression is strongly recalled by a twelve year old named Travis as he explains when he found his father breaking down outside his house“My dad was the strongest man I knew, but the Depression brought him to his knees” (Life During the Depression, 2002, para.4). Meaning that even the strongest man during the depression couldn't handle their lives and the everyday struggle to survive along with their families.
