Effects of The Great Depression The Great Depression started in the 1930’s. It affected many different people in many different ways. It affected the farmers because there was a surplus of food driving prices down, the children because they had little to no food, it made some people famous, and even the president’s because they had to try to find a way to make things better and give the people relief. It was a very difficult time in history. There were very little jobs or food. Some people starved and were poor. The depression was so widespread people all over the US got affected in some way. People felt they needed to contribute to the depression in some way, that they needed their opinions heard by the public. Some people even got famous for their works. One woman who is very well-known for her pictures during the Great Depression is Dorthea Lange. One picture I found rather interesting was her picture “The Road West, New Mexico.” This is a picture of the long road to California. It relates to the Great Depression because it shows the long lonely road to “nowhere”. In the picture, the road is long and empty. There were no places to get food or resources for the long journey ahead. The days and nights were portrayed to be very long (Lange). Ms. Lange showed the daily life during the depression very well. She showed the long roads, the concerned unhappy adults, and the children, playing happily, oblivious to the situation. Another person who became more well known during this era is a man named Woody Guthrie. He wrote a song called “This Land is Your Land. In the song “This Land is Your Land”, Woody Guthrie talks about the Great Depression and the great migration to California. He states, “From coast to coast the land is for the people.” He tells that the weather was sunny, windy, and dusty. He also tells that he saw hungry people everywhere, even in the church and relief offices. He strongly felt the land was solely for the people and that their belongings were being taken away.
