I. Biographical Sketch of the Author
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. During his early life his family moved between Syracuse and Buffalo, New York for his father's job. In 1908 F. Scott Fitzgerald's father lost his job, so his family moved back the St. Paul, Minnesota. When Fitzgerald was 15, his parents sent him to a Catholic preparatory school in New Jersey, from which he graduated from. After graduating, Fitzgerald decided to stay in New Jersey and attend Princeton University, where he became highly dedicated to writing. • Tom Buchanan- The husband of Daisy Buchanan, lives in East Egg, comes from a social sold old family, was formerly a part of Nick Carraway's social group at Yale and a very wealthy young man.
• Daisy Buchanan-Lives in West Egg, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Nick Carraway's cousin, the wife of Tom Buchanan, and the woman that Jay Gatsby is in love with.
• George Wilson- Husband of Myrtle Wilson and runs a car shop close to the valley of ashes.
• Myrtle Wilson- Tom Buchanan's secret lover and the wife of George Wilson
V. Themes
In The Great Gatsby, the themes are obviously portrayed vividly and sometimes in heartbreaking ways. Everyone's lives revolve around the near caste-like social system, how the look to society, and how much wealth everyone has. Mortality, one of the sad themes in the story, is portrayed in various, unexpected way. The death of Myrtle Wilson is a significant example of mortality.
