To achieve Nostos, Greek travelers rely on the Zenia and generosity of their hosts in order to return home safely, as seen in Homer’s epic, The Odyssey. Weary Greek travelers depend on the zenia, or kindness, of their hosts and their willingness to accommodate them on their journey home. Typically hosts give zenia to increase the comfort of their guests, showering them with luxuries and gifts. Within The Odyssey, Odysseus’ son, Telemakhos, arrives at the home of Menelaos, an old friend of his father, in search of information regarding Odysseus. Telemakhos rests at Menelaos’ home until Athena arrives, urging him to return to Ithaka.

War, home, and family are all important aspects of the Homer’s Odyssey, as well as Odysseus to Telemachus, Joseph Brodsky’s poem adaptation of the Odyssey. However, war, home, and family can also all be perceived differently. One example of this comparison is the contrast between Homer’s Odysseus and Brodsky’s Odysseus. Both of these characters share a name and a story, but the two have diverse, polar opposite, views of war, home, and family. Homer’s Odysseus has defining characteristics like strength, courage, and nobility.
The Greek’s had eight evil thoughts that they lived by, similar to the moral codes of today. They were taught to avoid these thoughts. “The Cyclops”, is an excerpt from Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Odysseus, the protagonist of the epic, explores the island that Polyphemus, the cyclops that is the antagonist of the episode, lives on. Odysseus and his crew meet Polyphemus and become trapped inside Polyphemus’ cave, where Odysseus uses his cunning to escape.
Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics of Christianity comes from Christians’ view of life as a journey. Jesus’s life, the standard for Christian living, ended up as a journey to the cross. Full of pain, these journeys offer solace in the hope of a happy ending, although uncertainty and pain lie between the believer and the end of the journey. Journeying home often becomes the main purpose of Christian journeys, while journeying from pain serves as an escape from unhealthy life experiences for Christians. However, the thirst for earthly desires and knowledge sometimes becomes a stumbling block for Christians.
In The Odyssey by Gareth Hinds, the countless examples of loyalty result in Odysseus and his family reuniting. When Odysseus is said to be dead or lost at sea, over a hundred suitors arrive at his kingdom, all wanting to marry his wife Penelope. Despite the hundreds of suitors constantly pestering her, she refuses to marry any of them. She continues to postpone her remarriage by telling them that she will remarry once she is done with her shroud, but destroys her work every night: “I wove a shroud for Laertes. All day I’d weave, but at night I’d pick out the work by candlelight.
In “The Odyssey”, Odyssey tells of his many adventures on his way home. He told these stories to a man at his last stop on his way home, because the man would give Odyssey a ship if Odyssey had some interesting stories to tell him. When reading three of the adventures, you could relate, “The Lotus-Eaters”, “The Sirens”, and “The Cyclops”, to a life lesson you may or have learned in modern day. Once Odyssey got to the adventure, “The Lotus-Eaters”, he learned that these men were addicted to the Honey Flower, Lotus, they meant no harm but only to share the Lotus plant that made whoever were to eat it loss hope of home.
World War One was the first time the world saw what a true war without restraints or mercy causes to the world. Nations didn’t need to have a strong army but a strong ally with whom they can drag down into whatever war they wished to wage upon any nation they had the slightest disagreement to justify the bloodshed and the loss of the basic human nature leaving soldiers with nothing more than memories of the barbaric actions they had implemented into the war just because a country wished to obtain the spoils of war. World War One came as the first war were the mass production of the war machine came into the world making countries able to mobilize more than 5 million armed troops into war not even with the necessity of rationing weapons, ammunition, or uniforms because of the ease nations had on placing all of their production into the war effort thus making it possible for countries to now mobilize such immense number of armed troops into a war.
Greek mythology can be viewed as a mirror to the ancient Greek civilization. Ancient Greek myths and legends often reflected how the Greeks saw themselves. Myths were used by Greeks to make justifications of every existing aspect of earth as well as their own society. In myths, Greek gods & heroes often represented key aspects of the human civilization. From Greek mythology, we can learn about the favorable characteristics of humans, such as their behavior and valuable skills that were approved of by the ancient Greek society.
Love, an intense feeling of deep affection. In Homer’s epic The Odyssey, almost all of the main characters do certain actions because of love. Love is a very powerful thing that one cannot see but knows is there and can feel it inside. It is in our lives everyday. In Homer’s epic The Odyssey, a major theme is that love is the force behind everyone's actions.
