Gregory David Roberts is an Australian author best known for his debut novel Shantaram. He is a former heroin addict and convicted bank robber who escaped from Pentridge prison in 1980 and fled to India for ten years. Hiding in Mumbai ,he set up charitable foundations to assist slum dwellers, worked in the Bollywood film industry as extras and served time in Arthur Road prison. He was recruited by one of the most charismatic branches of the Mumbai mafia for whom he worked as a forger, counterfeiter, and smuggler and fought alongside a unit of mujaheddin guerilla fighters in Afghanistan He also wrote the original screenplay for the movie adaptation of Shantaram. However the movie has not yet released. The novel chronicles approximately ten years in Robert’s amazing life, from his arrival in Mumbai in 1980 until his departure from Mumbai. In this course of time, Robert’s fictional self, Lin, participates in numerous violent, funny, moving and dangerous events.Shantaram is a superbly written meditation on good and evil. The simple, gorgeous language undoubtedly is the biggest strength of the book. Potent, lyrical, richly philosophical resonates with one on all the highs and lows of the multifaceted plot. In a nut shell the story is about Love, Fate ,Happiness ,Revenge, Mumbai ,Darkness ,Tears ,Hope, Personalities, reality of war between mafia gangs , Beliefs, Peace ,beauty in the most unexpected places , Life.
