The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater was created after a famous performance, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of African-American dancers in March 1958, dramatically changed how individuals viewed American dance. The theater’s goal was to celebrate the African-American culture and preserve the legacy of modern dance, which has since, been achieved through performances, “for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 28 states and 71 countries on six continents[...] (by) more than 235 works by over 90 choreographers,” (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater). Alvin Ailey, born in Texas, grew up knowing that his experiences living in the South would have some influence on his works later on his life. In Los Angeles, Ailey began to dance when he discovered the beauty of dance by the performances of Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Katherine Dunham Dance Company. Soon after, his friend persuaded Ailey to join a class in one of the first racially-integrated dance studios which existed in the United States, led by Leston Horton.
Alvin Ailey (1931-1989), American choreographer and activist became one of the leading figures in the 20th century modern dance. He began dance training at age of eleven. At this age he was learning classical, folk, social, and modern dances. He started studying extensive dance at the age of 19 with Lester Horton in 1949. He joined Lester’s dance company in 1950.
“Dance me Outside” by W. P. Kinsella tells the story of little Margaret Wolfchild, an eighteen year old Indigenous mother who is brutally murdered by Clarence Gaskell at the Blue Quills Dance Hall (21). The film by the same name attempts to convey a similar message, but there are key differences such as overlooking the Gaskell’s trial. The broader scope of film allows for the story to be told through multiple perspectives, aiding in rounding out the characters and providing them with a realistic dynamism. In her book “Iskwewak Kah Yaw Ni Wahkomakanak” Janice Acoose criticizes Kinsella’s portrayal of Indigenous women, particularly a character from a different story of Kinsella’s named Linda Starr (69). I attended a Nashville Irish Stepdancers performance at the Texas Troubadour Theater. The theater was in the middle of a strip mall in Orpy Mills. The inside was setup with pews and had a very medieval essence. The performance was to be a celebration of the Irish culture and include the vibrant spirit of the heritage. In the program, the choreographer and founder of the Nashville Irish Step Dancers, Mary Moran, said that the show not only highlights traditional pieces, such as the jig and treble reel, but also explores more progressive styles of Irish dance and music.
The Alvin Ailey modern dance company is known internationally for their works and dancers but how they began is a very interesting story. The company formed in 1958 and just two years later one of the most memorable and notable performances of the company was created, “.Revelations”. Although Alvin Ailey was the creator and director of this company, Ailey’s style and the technique he used and that the company still uses stems from Lester Horton. Horton was a pivotal teacher for Ailey and inspired him to create a company and carry on this technique from Horton. Garry Stewart, an intelligent mind, whose unique incorporation of photography, video, robotics, and other multimedia advances, developed a distinctive identity that the company is renowned for; the dancers capabilities to exceed 'the boundaries of the body and its modes of expression. ' Classes in break-dancing and gymnastics are part of the dancers training, to create fast and physically demanding bodily movement; captivating the audiences with appreciation for their expertise.
This dance is supposed to be beautiful to show everyone how wonderful differences could be. The style in which the story is written changes in this passage by showing a lovely, beautiful scene than the usually harsh tones. Question Four :
Mambo Girl (1957), a movie musical, follows Kailing, a talented young woman widely admired for her singing and dancing capabilities, as she searches for acceptance after learning the truth about her background. Shall We Dansu? (1996) follows Mr. Sugiyama, a Japanese accountant who goes on a secretive and intimate journey into the world of ballroom dance. Both Mambo Girl and Shall We Dansu? emphasize the close relationship between intimacy and Latin dance by linking Kailing and Mr. Sugiyama’s manners of dancing Latin to the emotional connection each has with other characters.

This statement creates a foundation for writing, specifically about dance, as each dance piece is always about something, no matter how simple it appears to be. As I began to write about dance I knew not only to provide a description of the piece, but utilize the description as evidence as I develop a possible meaning. Additionally he explains, “There can be different, competing, and contradictory interpretations of the same artwork” (Barrett 73). Samantha Garcia Nile Hartline ENG 105 USE 12187 26 September 2015 Three Dancing Figures, Version C “I think public art (unless there is a specific political or ideological message) should make people feel comfortable, and brighten their environment.” As I walked through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, there were a few sculptures that I found appealing but the one sculpture that caught my eye in particular was the Untitled Three Dancing Figures. The sculpture itself has an interesting design in which all of the Dancing Figures are touching each other and it seems as if the figures are marching and dancing in order. The sculpture was designed by Keith Haring in 1989, but was not assembled until 2009 when John and Mary Pappajohn commissioned
The male and female dancers, in Dark Matters choreographed by Crystal Pite, use movements throughout the dance that produce a visceral response from the audience. The performance begins with the two dancers partnering blissfully; they initiate their movements from the upper body and stay connected in some way. For these reasons one can conclude that the two dancers are comfortable, have a relationship with each other. The swaying section was brought to a complete stop when the woman collapses to the floor moving away from her partner. The man rushes over to her seeming to apologize to her, with a kiss.
Life is short. This statement is made by many but taken seriously by so few. The song “I Hope you Dance” by Lee Ann Womack , and more specifically the lyric “When you get the chance to sit it out or dance/I hope you dance” (8-9) describes the decision of living life to the fullest. Life will not stop for anyone or anything so why not live life with such caution. No one can make the rain stop so why does one choose to sit inside waiting for the storm to pass.
Is one phone call or text really worth someone’s life? So many people are killed everyday due to distracted driving involving cellphones. Yet, so many are blinded by the situation. However, no one should use cellphones while driving because of the danger it provides, the accidents that’ll occur, and the lives that can be lost. Using your cellphone while driving causes many dangerous situations.
