Group Observation Paper

The group I have decided to write my group observation paper on is my old folk dancing group. I am no longer part of this group but I have remained in contact with my former coach for that class. They are a group of 6 or more boys and girls who work together towards a common goal which is Serbian folk dancing. They have to work together to dance in the same formation and help each other if someone is struggling. They all know they belong to a group because they would not be able to perform if one member is missing. They all know they have a deadline by when the team needs to learn a dance by. They take turns as to who will lead what dance routine so everyone has a chance to experience the leadership role. I have decided to write about this

The group is open to all who have an interest in dancing regardless of whether they are Serbian Orthodox Christians or not. The aim of the group is to create awareness on all dances in the folk category from the 14th and 19th century to the present. The members believe in the spirit of dance as a way of promoting fun and happiness. The group holds regular club sessions throughout the year. A couple times a year, the team organizes events to present their dances along with other traditional folk dances from around the world. During these events dancers wear traditional clothing that represent their dance culture. The Serbian Folk Dance Group qualifies as a group because of its cohesive nature. Members feel that they are part of the dance group, and this makes them participate actively in all their shows. The team’s cohesiveness is evidenced in the manner in which members perform. It is always evident, even from the pictures of the group, that its members feel a sense of unity. They are guided by the group’s norms in the preparation of their events. The manner in which members make an effort to dress appropriately for all their performances, qualifies the team as a group. Therefore, the Serbian Folk Dance Group forms a good basis for analysis as it reflects all the characteristics of a group. It fits into the definition of a group. They come together to achieve a shared goal. The Serbian Folk Dance Group acknowledges the importance of teamwork. The group is a team of individuals who enjoy dancing and who have come together to promote dance. A look at the group’s dynamics indicates that members are driven by their love for dance. They organize dances partly because they are joined by their appreciation for music. Additionally, the group is open to all individuals as long as they are interested in dancing. Openness is a good attribute since it reveals that the group is not biased in its selection of members. An effective group should recruit members on the basis of ability and interest rather than prejudice. The members who join the team must also show that they understand and value the importance of belonging to a
