Power is “the ability of individuals or groups to impose their will upon others and make them do things even against their own wants or wishes” (Haviland, 267). One reason for which power is used is behavior modification. In Haiti, for example, religion is used to control morality. They use the population beliefs in Voodoo to maintain people’s good behavior. African slaves were taking to Haiti by the French, since the French could not communicate with the slaves in their native language, the French masters forced the slaves to learn how speak French. After a war, where the African slaves revolted. The French lost and left Haiti and the slaves still spoke French.

The One to Blame Growing up in a big Hmong family, I was never the right child to begin with. It was believed and practiced that boys are the one and only person that will carry on the family clan name to the next generation. Women on the other hand, were viewed the opposite compared to men. Women were expected to marry at a young age and leave their family behind to go live with their husband side of the family. Because of this, women were often not being supported in getting an education.
Growing up, I was never afraid of being myself. I have a very large family, so I knew how to socialize very well at a young age. I am 13 years old. I have been working since I was seven. My job is full of sweat, hard work, tears, pain, frustration, pressure, time, sunburns, and losing my voice.
