In “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst shows that one should not take the easy way out by submitting to one’s obstacles because in the end, it won’t be worth it. “I heaved him up again collapsed… ‘I just can’t do it.’ [Doodle says]” (Hurts 598). An example of the theme is when Doodle submits to his obstacle, which is his brother setting a goal for him he doesn’t care to achieve. By not facing his problems, The narrator’s younger brother’s problems get worse, and somewhat lead to his death.
In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Doodle’s older brother is responsible for his death because he hated having a crippled brother and he was selfish. The older brother was embarrassed to have a crippled brother. He ran away, leaving Doodle feeling a bit cruel. Doodle and his older brother found a dead scarlet ibis in their yard. They went together to bury it.
Doodles brother was embarrassed to have a not all there brother. It was very clear at the beginning of the book that the brother wanted doodle dead. His brother never wanted to be around him because he was scared to be made fun of. He wanted doodle to run and swim and play like all the other children
Embarrassment can make us do things that aren't always right. In the end The narrator's embarrassment killed his little brother. Next time you are embarrassed of somebody or something, think of this story and Watch your actions. Before doodle died, the two brothers found a dead scarlet ibis in there yard. The Scarlet ibis was forced with the storm to go where it wasn't supposed to be, The bird represents doodle and the narrator/older brother is the storm, forcing doodle to do something that isn't meant to be.
It's the narrators fault for the following reasons: he was selfish, he was embarrassed of him, and he pressured him. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator is an abuser to his younger brother Doodle. For example, a few weeks before school was to begin, Doodle experiences sleepless nights and wakes up crying from nightmares as a result of his brother’s goal to teach Doodle to walk. It is understandable to try and have Doodle learn to walk day by day, but the stress Doodle is under to please his brother shows how the narrator puts his own pride above Doodle’s well-being. Considering that the narrator doesn’t take Doodle’s responses to his activities into account as he teaches, the narrator knows no boundaries as to what is helpful and what is treated as abuse. Here is my evidence. First reason the narrator is guilty of Doodle’s death is because he was ashamed of him. This is clearly shown when brother makes the statement on page 347 “I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This clearly shows the narrator's shame in Doodle. Another statement
Yet again the brother proves his guilt on page 347 stating, in an eerie form, “But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle became mine.” His brother is admitting Doodle’s innocence. Next, the brother gives us plenty of moments that prove his cruel behavior and thoughts during the story. As he goes to give us proof of my statement on page 345, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so
Brother often foreshadows that Doodle is a burden to bare with. Brother reckons, “The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awaked. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us” (Hurst 6). Just the idea if Doodle in Brother's Plans and the obstacle he would become was too much for Brother to handle. Because if this act Brother is once again showing an act of selfishness.
The Scarlet Ibis The theme in the story "The Scarlet Ibis", written by James Hurst, is that too much pride can become destructive in one's life. In the story, the theme is demonstrated through the use of symbolism. The first symbol is the coffin, which is introduced to the reader at the beginning of the story when Doodle was born, as no one believed Doodle would live long. The coffin supports the theme of the story as the narrator, also Doodle's brothers, takes Doodle to see his coffin and makes him touch it by using emotional blackmail when he says "Then I'll leave you here by yourself, I threatened, and made as if I were going down", as Doodle was afraid to be left alone in the attic.
The narrator didn’t really love Doodle, was cruel to him, and thought him how to stuff out of his own selfishness, so thank to the gift of pride, the narrator is guilty for the murder of his brother Doodle. The narrator despised Doodle. When Doodle was born and alive- against what the doctor said- the narrator says, "I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow" (Hurst 345). The narrator wants to kill his brother because he realized he would not die and because of that, won't be able to do anything physically like brothers do together.
At this point, the narrator is around 12 years old, which is the age most states try a juvenile for heinous crimes. Brother acknowledged he knew the difference between right and wrong and did the wrong thing showing that he was mature enough to be responsible for Doodle. As the rain started to fall on them, a tree falls and “Doodle, who had fallen behind, cried out ‘Brother, Brother, don’t leave me!’ The knowledge that... my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened.
The narrator is responsible for his brother’s death because he allowed his own pride and embarrassment drive him to push Doodle because he was not the same as the other children, he was aggressive toward Doodle and at times abusive, and pushed Doodle too far and didn’t understand his limitations.
Losing Doodle “It's okay to lose your pride over someone you love. Don't lose someone you love over your pride. ”(Unknown) Pride is a powerful thing. It can kill and raise up, it can keep you from admitting your wrong.
