The older brother gets mad, and Doodle dies. Doodle is overall a favorite character for people because he’s just an incredible character everyone could love. Doodle had a unique personality. His family and older brother thought this as well. His brother even described him, “Doodle was just about the craziest brother a boy ever had.
Here is my evidence. First reason the narrator is guilty of Doodle’s death is because he was ashamed of him. This is clearly shown when brother makes the statement on page 347 “I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This clearly shows the narrator's shame in Doodle. Another statement
Brother was at fault for Doodle’s death for pushing him too hard. Brother kept running in the rain and he left Doodle behind because he couldn’t keep up. Doodle and Brother were out practicing to make Doodle more normal.
If everything happens for a reason, then Doodle was purposely put into their lives for a certain purpose. The narrator tells of how he wants nothing more than to have someone to play with and to do activities with. Infact, the narrator stated, ‘It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable.’ His thoughts probably consisted of, ‘Why did this happen to me? Why do I have to have an invalid brother?
Yes, I think the narrator is responsible for Doodle’s death. He could have helped him when he fell but he was being lazy. He “ran as fast as [he] could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us.” (6) The narrator left Doodle behind during the storm leading to him dying.
Imagine if you just learned something new and the person you trust most leaves you at the most important time. Or if you are in a situation where you are learning how to walk and get left behind to die. Well, that is exactly what happened to Doodle in “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. The older brother is responsible for Doodle’s death because he left him behind. The first reason the older brother is responsible for Doodle’s death is because the older brother did not listen to Doodle when he said he was too tired for a lesson, and tried to push him too hard.
On page “347” Doodles brother was ashamed of having a crippled brother. His brother also left him in the rain when doodle had tripped and fell. His druther didn 't turn around and help doodle. These are a couple of reasons why i think doodle died because of his brother. I also believe that doodle 's brother killed him because, on page “345” his brother had plans to smother doodle in his sleep.
In the short story The Scarlet Ibis the narrator is a bad brother. He does malevolent and egoistic things to make himself feel better. He most of the things with doodle because he is either forced or for self pride and have a selfish and egoistic ground to them. He does things to Doodle sometimes just to be malicious. This goes off the sense that most good deeds have evil roots.
Is the narrator responsible for the death of doodle. Yes, the narrator is responsible for the death of doodle because, he was with doodle in the storm them he had started sprinting away from doodle as doodle is saying don't leave me brother, but the narrator keeps on running until he can hear his voice no more. What i think is that the narrator had run away from doodle since he thought he was a burden to him. (In page2 paragraph 2) he says that doodle is a burden in many ways.
Brother planned to spend his entire life with Doodle, They "decided that when [they] were grown [they'd] live in Old Woman Swamp and pick dog-tongue" (Hurst). He wanted Doodle to have pride in himself and be able to do everything Brother wanted to do with him. Brother had pride in Doodle since he was first able to stand on his own and walk. He taught Doodle out of his own selfishness, he was ashamed of having an "invalid" brother and wanted to have "someone to race to Horsehead Landing, someone to box with, and someone to perch within the top fork of the great pine behind the barn, where across the fields and swamps you could see the sea" (Hurst). Brother was ashamed of the way he felt and his self-indulgent efforts for Doodle.
“ The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind...” Throughout the story, the young narrator shows mixed emotions when it comes to Doodle. When Doodle was first born, his brother was upset at the fact that Doodle would never live up to be the brother that he wanted so he planned to kill him out of hate.
The quote “He seemed all head with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s”, Gave the reader a view of how fragile Doodle’s body is. They thought at first, he was not going to make it, but he ended up surviving. When the mom explains to the older brother, Doodle is different and will not be able to do things that other kids do, he is then disappointed at having Doodle as his brother. He wants to be able to do things with Doodle, like he would be able to do with the other kids,
There would be many ways that the story would be different if it was told from Doodles perspective. First off instead of Doodle being a burden to his brother, Doodle could think of it as he's able to learn things from his brother and bond. An example of that is when brother was embarrassed that his brother was disabled so he taught him to do the basics. Another way the story might be different is that at first brother didn't want to bring Doodle with him and if Doodle was telling the story maybe he would have wanted to go with him and be with his brother.
Given all the evidence in the story there’s no doubt about it that Doodle’s death was because of his brother’s dislike for him, self-pride, and decisions when Doodle needed his brother most.
