In the short story The Scarlet Ibis the narrator is a bad brother. He does malevolent and egoistic things to make himself feel better. He most of the things with doodle because he is either forced or for self pride and have a selfish and egoistic ground to them. He does things to Doodle sometimes just to be malicious. This goes off the sense that most good deeds have evil roots.
For instance, The reader knows that the narrator is a bad brother when the brother renames him Doodle. The brother says,"It was perhaps the kindest thing I ever did for him because nobody expects much from someone called Doodle" Hurst 8. Renaming a loved one would be an act of kindness but not renaming someone a rude name. He renames him Doodle because his little brother is weak and doesn't do anything; he is invalid. This shows the brother brings him down instead of lifting him up. He looks down on him he doesn't have faith in Doodle. A brother making his younger sibling touch his casket is very cruel Then threatening if it is not touched you would be left alone, which is Doodle's biggest fear. The brother manipulates Doodle on purpose. This shows cruelty from an older sibling making their own blood suffer for matter enjoyment. This point could be considered "tough love" to some and make him mentally stronger as a person.
So it depends on how you interpret the brother's motivations for wanting to teach Doodle these skills. The narrator admits that he wants to be proud of his younger brother, so the desire to teach Doodle the physical skills is a selfish one. When Doodle shows that he can't perform these skills to the narrator's liking, the narrator abandons Doodle to the rain storm and eventually, death.
