In the story of “The Lady with the Dog”, the character Gurov’ character changes because of the events that occur in the story. At the beginning of the story, Gurov seems heartless, he does not respect the people around him including his wife, “he has begun being unfaithful to her long ago -- had been unfaithful to her often, and, probably on that account, almost always spoke ill of women, and when they were talked about in his presence, used to call them "the lower race” (172). He also does not feel anything toward women and thinks “their beauty aroused hatred in him and the lace on their linen reminded him of scales” (175). Love could be a reflex action. The memories and the dreams did not stop rather it progressed; “then his memories passed into dreams, and in his fancy the past was mingled with what was to come. Anna Sergeyevna did not visit him in dreams but followed him about everywhere like a shadow and haunted him” (179). According to the story Gurov hardly communicates with his fellow men because " In the society of men he was bored and not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative” (172). Gurov changed his lifestyle by being more in the company of men. He was hunted by the love of Anna that he could not resist telling an official in the doctor’s club, "If only you knew what a fascinating woman I made the acquaintance of in Yalta!" (180). Gurov who was a gentle man later turned into a stalker because his love and feelings knew no bounds. He became love sick and decided to take a risky mission, he set off for S- to see Anna. When he got to S- he got the necessary information about Anna and hastily went to old Gontchary Street to find her house. Gurove became a prowler, “He walked up and down, and loathed the grey
