Mary was born on October 13, 1754 and came from a German family who lived in Trenton, New Jersey. Not much was known about her childhood, but she was not taught how to read or write. At the age of 15, she began working as a domestic helper for a family who lived in Carlisle Pennsylvania.
When she was just 1 and a half her family moved to Missouri. A year later they moved to Kansas. Then they returned to Wisconsin when she was 4. Laura and Mary went to school in Walnut Grove. When Laura was 10 they moved again to Burr, Iowa.

In today's society a countless amount of intelligent young adults throw away their talent by making short sided decisions, or partaking in harmful habits. Some claim the dilemma on modern media glamorizing such bad habits. Others asseverate that the people around them are to blame. None the less Gwendolyn Brooks expresses these concerns in an almost morbid fashion with her powerful poem "We Real Cool" which conveys a cautionary theme that those who chose to live fast paced lives filled with so called "cool" choices tend to live short lives. Her use of rhythm, dialect, and word choice presents the almost unnerving theme in an incredibly haunting way .
Mary was born August 5, 1861 in Belleville,IL to Henry and Lavinia Richmond. She was raised by her grandmother and two aunts in Baltimore, MD after her parents died. She grew up around racial problems, suffrage, social, and political beliefs. Because she grew up around those things she started becoming a critical thinker and social activism. Richmond was home schooled because her grandmother and aunts were not familiar with the traditional education system until the age of eleven when she entered public school.

Wells wrote many articles about the issues of race and politics in black newspapers. She was very good at her job and the owner of two newspapers, “The Memphis Free Speech” and “Headlight and Free Speech” (U.S. National Park Service). She covered about 728 cases in 8 years about the lynchings in the south. Wells-Barnett was not the kind of woman to back down from a challenge, she never failed to get her point across. She risked her life as a woman of color just to gather information.
She showed all African American women and men that they can achieve the impossible and have an intelligent mind like everyone else. Even African American poets from today like Alice Walker found her as an inspiration. Ruby Nell Bridges was born on september 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. Ruby Bridges grew up on a farm with her grandparents and parents. Ruby’s family where all sharecroppers in Mississippi. At that time she was an only child. When she was 4 she and her parents moved to New Orleans for a better life in a bigger city.

Baldwin is the grandson of a former slave and was the oldest of nine children where he grew up in poverty. At the age of fourteen, he discovered his passion for writing and reading by his hobby was going to libraries. As year He published his first book in 1955 known as Notes of a Native Son.
