The Academic Habits of Mind includes four key habits needed to be an effective writer. These four key habits includes a.) Inquiring b) Seeking and valuing complexity c.) Understanding that academic writing is a conversation and d.) Understanding that writing is a process.
To be an efficient writer, one should learn how to make inquiries, we should learn how to observe, ask questions about the things that are not clear to us and also consider other alternatives. We should learn how to reflect on the things that we observe and examine issues from multiple points of view. These habits are curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility and metacognition. The four key habits of mind and the habits of mind from the “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing” have a lot of similarities. The first key habit of mind is inquiry and inquiry is made out of curiosity. We observe something we are curious about and ask questions out of our curiosity. The second key habit of mind is seeking and valuing complexity this also involves curiosity, openness and engagement. This habit of mind includes openness to reflect on what we observe, engagement to examine issues from multiple points of view and curiosity to ask issue based questions. The third key habit of mind to understand that academic writing is a conversation, in connection with the key habits of mind, this involves metacognition, engagement and flexibility. In every conversation whether it is an oral or academic conversation, metacognition and engagement is a must, in a conversation people could have different beliefs and we should learn how to respect and understand other peoples reason on how they came up in believing what they believe in. The story of “Scholarship Boy” is about the story of Rodriguez who is a Mexican decent who moved in America and ended up being very successful in his academics and became a journalist. When Rodriguez first came to America, he was only six years old and was not able to speak English fluently. In his story he showed persistence on how he became successful through his brother and sisters’ achievements—his brother and sisters both excelled in class and were successful in life, openness to new cultural environment, engagement by devoting himself into studying, he stated “Here is a child who cannot forget that his academic success distances him from a life he loved, even from his own memory of himself”, flexibility and metacognition by learning how to blend in into his new environment that is very different from what he is used
