Introduction
In selecting my research question for my project. My motivation for doing so is due to the fact the one lives in a society that is contemporary and rapidly evolving. Therefore, my selection behind the topic of hair and dress choices is one that is of personal hair and dress choices. Along with being able to establish the different methods that identity influence these choices. Especially amongst young black women navigating the university spaces and comparing that environment outside of it, such as home.

My research question for my project is: “what are the ways in which hair and dress choices determined by identity?”

Is a type of non-probability or non-statistical type of research that focuses on the purpose of the study and selection is based on specific characteristics of a population. Meaning that it is a technique that bases research based on understanding of the researcher (Understanding Purposive Sampling, 2017). Using purposeful sampling allows for an understanding of the research that is in depth, rather to rely only on generalizations that are empirical (Suri, 2011: 65). There are different types of purposeful sampling. Some include: maximum variation, phenomenal variation and theoretical variation (Coyne, 1997: 628). However, in accordance to my specific research I would like to find out the perspective of young black women living in contemporary South Africa that is diverse and part of the world of globalization.
The explanation regarding the ethical dimensions that I will provide to my interviewees is of the stipulated time that I ideally would like to interview them for. Secondly, brief them on the questions that I will ask them and that they are free to answer in a way they feel comfortable. Thirdly, state that everything said in the interview will be recorded. Although, if they do wish to keep some information off the record, then it can be done in writing and will not be formally published.
