Halloween is something that is new to us. In my culture we do not celebrate Halloween. It is something we do not think about. At first I did not understand what it meant. I know that a lot of people dress up and there is candy given to children. I began researching what Halloween was and I read that it was connected to an older religion and had something to do with bad spirits. I did not like it or understand the purpose of the holiday. Overtime I noticed a lot of the decorations that my neighbors and other public places would put up. They looked friendly and I liked seeing them. Holidays have also been something that I have tried to research and understand, but the information online can be different from the actual thing.
I remember when I first came to the United States one of my professors had divided us into groups in the classroom on Halloween. They then gave each group a pumpkin and told us how to carve it. This was new for many of us and we had never done something like this before because no one in my culture celebrates Halloween. It was new for many of us and we did not know what to expect. I think that the teacher did a good job introducing us to Halloween, it was surprising but they presented the holiday in a way that we could enjoy it while feeling comfortable. The schools have prepared and sent out a lot of information to parents. They told us what our children would be doing and they also provided restrictions on costumes for the children. My children chose their costumes, they were a fireman, policeman, and doctor. They enjoyed dressing up and having fun with other children, it was fun to see everyone in costume. My children went trick or treating in an enclosed, safe area. I helped out at their party and was present for the trick or treating, it was fun to watch the teachers and principals dress up and interact with
