Alternative music is the catch all category in the industry, so how do two alternative artist compare when they go head to head? Within alternative music, there are many subcategories that make alternative such a wide variety of music. The Neighbourhood, a band based in California, and Ashley Frangipane, a singer from Washington D.C. with the stage name of Halsey, both fall into the subcategory of alternative pop. Although, living within the same subcategory, the artist both have very different sounds. This is because The Neighbourhood and Halsey also live in different subcategories of alternative. The Neighbourhood is better than Halsey based on instrumentals, lyrics and style of music.

The style a band or singer portrays gives the audience a specific image of the artist and is what differentiates one singer to the next. The music seems as if there is a late night zen feeling (Turner). The Neighbourhood’s style is more laid back, it gives the feeling of peace and serenity. The music is the perfect music to kick back and relax to while laying on the beach or chilling in bed. “... which vibrate with the twist and turns of a young woman taking command of her body, mind and then the world” (Levy). Halsey’s style is much like Beyonce and Rihanna, she thinks she runs the world. In reality, Halsey is new to the music scene and barely has enough followers to go on a world tour. Her style comes off as controlling, rude and cocky. The simplicity of how the band combines an assortment of genres makes for a diversity in their fan base (Biru). A big part of what makes The Neighbourhood so good, is how seamlessly they blend two styles of music together. This blending of genres gives the band a unique sound that is bold and stands out. With instrumentals that seem reproduced and lyrics that seem copyrighted, she give off an Ultraviolence vibe (Reese). It is one thing to take inspiration from certain albums, however when an album has the same style as the other is when a line is crossed in the music industry. The overly dramatic music Halsey creates, makes it seem like it is unoriginal, which strips her of having her own style of music. The distinct style of an artist is what makes that performer appeal to the audience and is key in making
