Alternative music is the catch all category in the industry, so how do two alternative artist compare when they go head to head? Within alternative music, there are many subcategories that make alternative such a wide variety of music. The Neighbourhood, a band based in California, and Ashley Frangipane, a singer from Washington D.C. with the stage name of Halsey, both fall into the subcategory of alternative pop. Although, living within the same subcategory, the artist both have very different sounds. This is because The Neighbourhood and Halsey also live in different subcategories of alternative. Her style comes off as controlling, rude and cocky. The simplicity of how the band combines an assortment of genres makes for a diversity in their fan base (Biru). A big part of what makes The Neighbourhood so good, is how seamlessly they blend two styles of music together. This blending of genres gives the band a unique sound that is bold and stands out. With instrumentals that seem reproduced and lyrics that seem copyrighted, she give off an Ultraviolence vibe (Reese). It is one thing to take inspiration from certain albums, however when an album has the same style as the other is when a line is crossed in the music industry. The overly dramatic music Halsey creates, makes it seem like it is unoriginal, which strips her of having her own style of music.
