William Shakespeare wrote many stories and novels about love, tragedies, and mystery. The story that I will be focusing on is "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Also known as Hamlet, this is a story written by William Shakespeare somewhere between 1599 and 1602(the exact date is unknown).The play enacts the revenge taken by Prince Hamlet of his deceased father by killing his Uncle Claudius. Claudius murdered his brother in envy and desired to gain power to the throne while marrying his brother's widow, Gertrude, who is also Hamlet’s mother. Hamlet, being Shakespeare's longest play, was also his most powerful and influential story during his lifetime and long after in English literature. At the beginning of the story a ghost appears to some soldiers. The ghost has a great resemblance to the late king who died mysteriously and the soldiers promise to relay this information to the son, Hamlet. Eventually the ghost appears before hamlet and confirms that he is indeed his father. He reveals to hamlet that his uncle, Claudius, murder him by pouring poison into his ears. Afterwards Claudius steals the throne for himself and to make things worse ends up marrying Hamlet's mother Gertrude the Queen of Denmark. The ghost goes on to tell hamlet that his must avenge his death by murdering Claudius and hamlet swears that he will. Hamlet revises a plan to expose Claudius's guilt with a play called "Mousetrap". In the play there is a part that reenacts the murder of his father by having a king murder by poison being poured in his ears. After seeing this Claudius gets very upset and storms out of the theater. By seeing this, Hamlet takes Claudius's reaction as proof that he was the one that murdered his father. Polonius, Ophelia's father, and Laertes, Ophelia's brother, try to convince Ophelia that Hamlet does not truly love her. They state that because he is a prince and his intentions are to seduce and woo her. She agrees to stay away from him. This later plays a part in hamlets plan when Hamlets appears to be crazy because of the issue of his father revenge; everyone believes he is crazy because he got rejected by love of his life Ophelia. The idea of hamlet being lovesick is further proven when Ophelia tells her father about the occurrence when hamlet came to visit her after she replied to his love letters. She described him as pale and trembling. His clothes were messed up and he appeared to be a crazy man. After hearing this Polonius truly believes that Hamlet loved Ophelia and is now going crazy because of the rejection. Claudius, Gertrude and Polonius get together to test the theory that hamlet is acting crazy because of love and not another reason. So they spy on a secret meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia. Hamlet acts very nasty towards her and tells her to go become a nun. They decided that this meeting disapprove the thought that hamlet was lovesick. Hamlet goes on to meet with his mother, not knowing that she has given Polonius permission to spy on the meeting by hiding behind a tapestry.
