At the beginning of the play Hamlet seems to be of sound mind he is mourning the loss of his father and is obviously disappointed at his mother for marrying her brother-in-law and the way she is handling the death of her husband. At this point the way Hamlet feels is reasonable, Hamlet depicts himself as being sincere. As the scene advances it is shown that Hamlet sees himself as powerless "My father's brother, but no more like my father/ than I to Hercules" (1.2.153) The uncertainties Hamlet has regarding his courage are made especially apparent in the way he acts as the play continues. These concerns are an obstacle to Hamlet and his need for revenge.

When it appears that the pressure starts to consume him, he begins to take it out on other characters like when Hamlet begins to be hostile towards Ophelia and it seems that Hamlet has gone mad but When characters like Hamlet are under the microscope it can be hard to establish what condition he is in throughout the play. In spite of that Hamlet is simply assuming the role of a mad man to determine his next course of action depending on the circumstance.
There are a lot of points during the play that could make Hamlet mad, such as when he accidently killed Polonius. In Act IV, Scene II things were chaotic as Hamlet decided that he needed to take revenge on Claudius, his fathers killer. Hamlet is presented with the opportunity to kill Claudius but instead accidently kills Polonius and the ghost of his father then visits
