Ask yourself this question; if someone close to you, perhaps even in your own family, murdered your father in cold blood would you be angry? Would you want revenge? If you think so then you identify with this play’s main character, Hamlet. You might even identify with Laertes who, because of Hamlet, is experiencing the same thing. Hamlet portrays the theme of revenge through his words and actions. The ghost of King Hamlet came to Hamlet and revealed to him that his uncle Claudius was his murderer. Throughout this story, Hamlet stops at nothing to get revenge for his father’s death. Throughout this play, Hamlet acts like he has gone mad because of his father’s death so he people would not take him seriously. It drove him to the point to where, as Polonius is hiding behind the tapestry in Act 3, Hamlet stabs through only because he thought it was the king listening in on them. In turn, killing Polonius. Gertude is appalled by what happens and says, “Oh what a senseless, horrible act!” (3.4 28) In response Hamlet says, “A horrible act—almost as bad, my good mother, as killing a king and marrying his brother.” (3.4 29-30) In the final act of this play, Hamlet finally has had enough with Claudius’ selfishness and treachery. Knowing that the wine cup is poisoned, Claudius watches Gertrude drink from it. As a result of this Hamlet, outraged, cuts the chandelier from the ceiling, causing it to fall on to Claudius, and then forces Claudius to drink from the poisoned
