For my essay, I chose to discuss and compare Shakespeare’s Hamlet Prince of Demark simply because it is one my favorite plays and the 2000 film adaption. I chose this film because it is a more modern take on the play while keeping the Shakespearean language. The story begins with Hamlets father already dead and Hamlet returning home to Demark for the funeral. Upon arriving he discovers that his uncle Claudius is now king and has married his mother. Enraged and shocked by this discovery he wanders off and in the midst of the chaos sees his father’s ghost and is told that the current king was the one who murdered him and tells Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet then fakes being crazy to find out if Claudius did indeed kill his father. Once his suspicions are confirmed he plans a way to kill him. The play ends with everyone dead and Hamlet forcing Claudius to drink poison, killing him. The 2000 film adaptation is similar to the original but there are some differences. He has just learned of his father’s death and he is talking about it on camera. Hamlet is a filmography student, this ties in to the original because the play has a lot soliloquys therefore a simple way to make reference to the play. The film goes on to show the ghost of Hamlet’s father and telling him that his uncle was his murderer and to seek revenge. Hamlet then comes up with a plan to fake that he’s crazy to find out if indeed his uncle killed his father. In this film, the way Hamlet played crazy was bizarre seemed that Hamlet was a more sarcastic and playful type of crazy. In the film, Hamlet to seemed to really care for Ophelia and was extremely against the marriage between his uncle and mother.
