Mesopotamia means “the land between the rivers”. It was called this because it was in between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Mesopotamia was one of the oldest civilizations and is now called Iraq. Mesopotamia was located in the Fertile Crescent, which is an arc of land located East of the Mediterranean Sea and stretches all the way to the Persian Gulf. Mesopotamia also contained many civilizations such as Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and New Babylon. Sumer was a civilization inside of Mesopotamia and had its own customs. Their customs contained things such as a social, political, religious, intellectual/ artistic, technological, and economic life. Sumer was a civilization from 3200b.c.-1900b.c.

Hammurabi also created codes and laws. They codified the laws meaning they put it down in writing. One of the codes was the Code of Hammurabi and some of the laws were civil and criminal laws. Civil being private matters and criminal being that you have done something to harm or an offense against someone else. These laws were very powerful. Babylon was an empire from 1790b.c.- 1595b.c.

New Babylon was rebuilt and ruled by Nebuchadnezzar and lasted from 626b.c.- 539b.c. When Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylon he made 85ft. walls surrounded by a large moat. New Babylon also had the hanging gardens which was once one of the seven wonders of the world. He also rebuilt a magnificent ziggurat.

Mesopotamia was a great civilization that ruled as well as the civilizations in it that progressed over time. Sumer had very many accomplishments from wool clothing to the wheel. These things have helped the world evolve over time. Akkad conquered my empires and land that helped them rule for a long time. Babylon ruled by Hammurabi he created the Code of Hammurabi, civil laws, and criminal laws which made that government a strong one. New Babylon was a great civilization with a strong government and made great monuments such as the ziggurats. Mesopotamia had many empires and civilizations that conquered and ruled for a long
