In Gilead Republic people (Son’s of Jacob) usually use Religious terms for political purposes. For example, Gilead is a theocracy- a government in which there is no separation between state and religion; according to Offred and Atwood “they thus replaced the serial polygamy common in the pre-Gilead period with the older form of simultaneous polygamy practiced both in early Old Testament times and in the former state of Utah in the nineteenth century”. (p.305). it seems like The Handmaid’s Tale is not a criticism of the Bible in itself, but a criticism of the way that people and theocracies use the Bible for their own oppressive purposes.
