Clay Jensen is the narrator of this story, as well as a victim on Hannah’s list. Although Hannah's tapes were supposed to address those who lead her to commit suicide, Clay's name is on the list so Hannah can thank him. "Clay, honey, your name does not belong on this list" (Asher 200).
What this means is that Hannah knows that she is alive and now knows how the “devil plays” with her mind. The manipulation has not tricked her and this is a point in which she can find light because her

Hannah has chosen to isolate herself from society and neglect her surroundings. This ignorance allows her to separate herself from the normalities someone of her age would live with, leaving a life revolving solely around piano. She disregards her friends and family, which portrays her level of ignorance. Furthermore, as Hannah progresses through her youth, she begins to realize all the things she misses due to the way she lives. As she becomes more aware of this, an urge builds up inside of her to “break [her] promise to Tante Rose” (4).
During the 1930s, fascism was spreading across Europe leading to authoritarian governments such as Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire. The war with Japan was still going on at the time of Germany’s surrender. The United States made the bold decision on August 6th and 9th, 1945 to drop an atomic on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in an attempt to end the war. The dropping of the bomb led to approximately 200,000 deaths in Japan, but shortly after the Japanese announced their surrender. The dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during August 1945, although inhumane, was necessary to end World War II because of the increased Japanese aggression during the war, their refusal to make peace with the Allies, and using
Black women played a vital role during the Civil Rights Movement, yet they were not fully recognized for their efforts. The struggles Ella Baker and Daisy Bates faced depict some of the internal injustice within the Civil Rights Movement. The general theme for both women is that their ideas and roles were not appreciated due to the fact that they were women. Baker, who risked her life to fight for injustice in the South received little backing from the NAACP, the very same organization demanding for equal rights. Frustrated by the way she was treated as the Director of the NAACP local branches, Baker resigned her position and founded the In Friendship group.

“Depression is a disorder most commonly associated with adolescent suicide” (Hittleman 1). When the pain is too hard to endure, some choose to intentionally end their own lives. Teens usually face more difficulties than tweens, yet they’re not as mature as adults, making them the most vulnerable victims of depression. In Jay Asher’s novel Thirteen Reasons Why, he made an accurate portrayal of depression by delineating the pessimistic thoughts of protagonist Hannah Baker throughout her story, and without receiving succor from her friends, teachers or parents, committed suicide to end an unabated affliction. Depression is an agonizing experience, yet it can be imperceptible from outside.

This shows that Hannah is living in her own world with her hopes and dreams. Hannah realized that she has a great talent and she can become a famous concert pianist one day. Hannah believed when Tant Rose said “ If [she] made a few sacrifices and worked hard [she] would be famous’’(1).
