Having your everyday step traced by a stalker doesn't sound like a typical situation, especially for a high school student. This is one of the many situations that have cause Thirteen Reasons Why to become one of the most controversial series released this year. The Netflix series is about a teenage girl named Hannah, who has moved to a new town and is trying to get the "hang" of things. Hannah descriptively explains, on thirteen tapes, the reasons that led her to her suicide. Many debatable situations have stirred differing opinions for all viewers, in all age ranges. Thirteen Reasons Why has brought a controversial exposure to events leading to her suicide, her rape, and her ultimate suicide. Hannah didn't get a very welcoming start to her new town. From being overwhelmed by her abnormal principal, to being dragged into a friendship, this wasn't the best way for her to begin. Many of these events contributed to the long list of reasons for her ultimate suicide. Even the many classmates that wanted to befriend her didn't try in a very efficient way. Ultimately, in the end the series shows a graphic presentation of her taking her life by using razors to cut her wrist. Producers explained that they input this scene to show that this actions is "not correct". This has been one of the main sparks that have cause the controversy in worried parents and schools. Many feel this is glorifying the suicide instead of getting the message out to those in real need. An explanation, reference, or discrete story would have been as affecting as the graphic scene.
