“A few nights later, however, Hans Hubermann came home with a box of eggs. ‘Sorry Mama.’ He placed them on the table. ‘They were all out of shoes.’ Mama didn’t complain.” Hans and Rosa Hubermann are different characters with very different personalities, but somehow they manage to make it work in their marriage. Hans Hubermann is kind, creative, smart, and always knows the right things to say to Liesel. For better or worse, Hans’s heart usually gets in the way of his brain. Rosa, on the other hand, is tough, cranky, mean, and quick to judge, but she can also step up to the plate during desperate times. Both Hans’s and Rosa’s personalities show for the first time when they first meet Liesel. She leaves you for dead, Mama.’ ‘Schwein!’ She shook the wooden spoon at him.” Hans Hubermann is a soft, creative, smart, and a great father. Following his big heart, he is always kind and compassionate with a bunch of jokes up his sleeve. Rosa Hubermann may be his polar opposite. She is hard, sassy, crabby, quick to judge, and quick to give a beating. She never shows it, but deep down, she loves Liesel and Hans very much. When the Hubermanns meet Liesel for the first time, they show their true selves. Hans Hubermann takes a quiet and kind approach to coax frightened Liesel out of the car, while Rosa on the other hand, just stood by while yelling and screaming at the child and curious bystanders.
