Using examples from the text, explain how the poem creates a scary, shivery feeling. The poem about the owl makes the chipmunk and bat uncomfortable because it tells about a creature that silently swoops down to eat its prey. “A shadow is floating through the moonlight, Its wings don’t make a sound. Its claws are long, its beak is bright… The ear that listens to the owl believes In death…” Describing the claws and beak of the owl makes the chipmunk might feel frightened as owls will prey upon hares, young foxes, chipmunks, and birds up to the size of ducks and gamebirds. The bird feels superior or above everyone else. The bat infers the mockingbird doesn’t have its own song to sing, so it imitates life and how others uniquely make their own songs. After completing your summary, predict how the mockingbird will react to hearing the bat's poem. Will he like it or dislike it? Why? I predict the mockingbird will not like the bat’s poem about him.
