The novel, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is a literary classic written by Harriet Jacobs. The author, Harriet Jacobs was a girl who was born into slavery and throughout her teenage years tried to avoid being sexually assaulted by her master. After 7 years of hiding by her grandmothers’ house, in the south, finally in 1842, she was actually able to escape by boat to the North, where her daughter lived. By 1853, Jacobs began to write letters to newspapers about women sold in slavery, and she also joined the abolitionist movement. She died on March 7, 1897. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is Jacobs’ story under the name of the main character “Linda Brent”. She allows for the reader to interpret the message of her opinion on slavery. Her attitude toward the events depicted in this book is never in question. Her attitude and message was developed in the beginning of the first paragraph of the first chapter. She wanted to convey an attitude toward slavery of that no one should have to go through a life like that. The author tells you not to feel sorry for her, and that wasn’t the idea of her book. However, you do feel sorrow and a depression tone due to the diction, themes, and writing styles she uses. She outright condemns every aspect of slavery, calling it an evil abomination of nature that worsens everything and everyone that comes in contact with it. She is rarely ambivalent about anything, aside from a few slave-holding individuals, such as Mr. Sands and a kind woman who aids her after her escape, whom she seems to see good qualities in despite the fact that they are owners of slaves. However, she believes that even they would be much better people if it were not for slavery. Her main attitude on slavery is how she basically wants to put an end to it, not just for her children, who were bought out of slavery, but for everyone who still was not
